In simple terms, a modem connects your home network to the internet, while a router allows you to connect multiple devices to the internet simultaneously.

In many instances, your internet provider, such as CenturyLink, will give you one box that has the functionalities of a router and a modem; however, they still remain separate technologies regardless of this fact. Some routers will not include a modem, and neither will all modems include routers. This means that you will need both, regardless of whether you get them in an integrated box or not, for all your home devices to gain internet access.

The best method is using a router and modem separately, if possible. This is because it will allow you to replace a modem after many years as its technology changes gradually, but a router will require more frequent replacements to boost its coverage, accommodate additional devices, or start using the latest versions of Wi-Fi technology. In this article, we will attempt to cover the differences between these devices, and where you can use them optimally.

Modem vs Router – How they compare

Overview of modems

Modems modulate and demodulate electrical signals that are sent in through your wiring – whether this is coax cables, phone lines, or other wiring types. This means that they change digital information originating from your computer into analog information that your wires will them transmit, and then take any incoming analog signals from the wires and change them to digital information that your computer understands.

Many modems that come as a standalone equipment have only two ports – one is an Ethernet jack that connects to your router or computer, and the other connects to the outside world.

If you are already using a cable internet service, the ISP is likely providing you with a modem, which you will pay for on a monthly basis as you are essentially leasing the service. Your choices are even more limited if you use a DSL provider like CenturyLink, or a fiber internet service. The ISP gives you a router/modem combo device, and they will probably not allow you to use your separate modem unless in specific instances.

Additionally, modems will also control the data size and flow and correct data errors within your network. For instance, if your ISP fails to match specific values that your devices use, the modem sends data back when this occurs, as well as telling the connected devices when to send data, the amounts of data they should read, and the data transfer speeds.

Types of modems

Modems come in several forms, which are:

IDSN and Analog – both these types are rarely in use today. The analog modem type only allows one data stream at a time, which means you cannot surf the internet and talk on the phone simultaneously. Due to this, it is also quite slow, with the maximum speed reaching 56 Kbps. IDSN is an improvement of the analog modem, as it can carry a maximum of three data streams simultaneously, and the maximum speed is 128 Kbps.

DSL – like the analog and IDSN modems, DSL modems use phone lines to send and receive data. However, they use different frequencies, which allows a user to use the internet and make phone calls. When using it, the maximum speed you can expect is 100 Mbps, although the real-world speed will greatly depend on the distance of your home or office from the nearest station of the ISP. In most cases, the speeds you will get will vary between 5 and 50 Mbps.

Cable – these are more reliable and faster compared to DSL. Although their speeds do not depend on how far you are from the ISP station, the problem is that the speeds will depend on the number of users on the network in your area; the more they are, the lower the speed gets. Cable modems can achieve maximum speeds of 1 Gbps, although you will usually get speeds varying between 25 and 200 Mbps. Alongside DSL, cable modems are the most common modems in use today.

Fiber optic – cable and DSL modems use electric signals in their data transmission, but fiber optic modems use light pulses. This eliminates the problem of getting lower speeds if you live far from the ISP’s station as well as when many users are in your network simultaneously. Most fiber connections will give you a maximum speed of 1 Gbps, although you will achieve a speed ranging between 50 Mbps and 1 Gbps. Due to its equipment, it is more expensive compared to DSL or cable, and it also has limited availability.

Pros of modems

Easy and convenient signal conversions

You can get high data transmission speeds, depending on the modem type

Flexible internet plans are available

Fax compatibility in some modems

Cons of modems

Vulnerability to malware attacks

Some modem types are hard to find, like fiber optic types

Internet Traffic interference

Overview of routers

On the other hand, the main job of a router is to connect multiple devices in your home to an internet network, as well as forming a home network inside your home. The modem and router work together as the modem connects to one port on the router, also known as the WAN (wide area network), then all your devices connect to the other ports (LAN) or wirelessly through Wi-Fi.

The IP address that the router uses on its WAN port is a public IP address, while LAN connections use a private IP address. If you live in a large home or have plenty of smart devices other than computers, streaming boxes, or phones, you will want to expand the network range from the router through using a mesh kit.

Pros of routers

Allows different devices to connect to the internet simultaneously

Helps to secure your internet network

Helps to reduce network interference

They can integrate easily with different modems

Cons of routers

Can experience slow connections at times

They can have Wi-Fi frequency compatibility issues

Implementation problems can arise

Conclusion: Should you use both a modem and router?

If you are planning to connect multiple devices or you want to use Wi-Fi, you will need both a modem and router. In many cases, you can use a device that combines the functions of both, although it is possible to opt for separate devices if you wish to do so.

FAQs

Are modems secure on their own in terms of internet access?

No, they are not. Since they create links between your computer and the internet, it is easy for unauthorized individuals to get confidential information, unless you set up a firewall or use a strong antivirus.

Can I use a router with any internet provider?

No, you cannot. The router must be compatible with the internet connection the ISP provides, and the ISP will specify the routers you should use.

CenturyLink C1100T vs. C1000A – How do they compare?

Wi-Fi protocols in use

Wireless standards are an important consideration in the router you choose, as certain protocols create faster connections compared to others.

The C1000A modem uses 802.11n, g, and b standards, which give it the benefits of both bandwidth and range, as well as connection stability. However, as the b and g protocols are older than the n protocol, the internet connection is slower and less stable in the C1000A, although their lower implementation costs allow you to purchase the modem at a cheaper cost.

On the other hand, the C1100T uses 802.11n, which improves on the speed and reliability of the 802.11g standard by boosting the bandwidth through MIMO technology. Its improved signal intensity also allows its compatibility with different devices to increase, especially if they use the 802.11a, b, or g standard.

Comparing the two, we find that the C1100T is the better choice as your internet connection is likely to remain stable throughout use, as well as a slightly faster connection on CenturyLink’s DSL network.

Number of ports

The C1000A has 6 ports – 1 DSL port, 1 phone port, and 4 Ethernet ports. On the other hand, the C1100T has 8 ports; one DSL port, one phone port, one WAN port, four Ethernet ports, and one USB port.

Ports are ultimately important to the versatility of your router, despite the wireless DSL internet connection both these modems provide to their users – nothing beats the stability and faster speeds that wired connections give you. Ultimately, you are better off with more ports to facilitate faster and easier connectivity, which means that the C1100T is the better choice between the two.

Compatibility with different devices

While the C1100T is compatible with both CenturyLink Prism TV and CenturyLink internet, the C1000A is only compatible with CenturyLink internet service. Therefore, if you want a modem that allows you to connect both your TV service and other devices to the internet in a stable connection format, the C1100T is the slightly better choice between the two.

Energy efficiency

Although this may seem like a minor difference, it is still quite significant between these two modems, and the growing consciousness of sustainable energy denote a growing importance of choosing efficient internet access equipment.

The C1000A is a router that tends to overheat during usage, likely due to the additional Wi-Fi protocols it uses as well as its power demands. Unfortunately, it does not include a power-saving mode in its extra features, unlike the C1100T, so it still consumes high amounts of power even during inactive periods.

On the other hand, the C1100T includes a power saving mode among its extra features, which allows you to use it for long periods without worrying about overheating problems and reduction of its long-term efficiency.

Therefore, the C1100T is a better choice for users who are conscious of energy-saving equipment, as well as improving its long-term durability as its inner components do not wear out as quickly.

This is among the strongest routers available for most internet connections today, thanks to its inclusion of a dual core 32-bit processor, Gigabit Ethernet switch, and powerful wireless N radio. This also allows it to support plenty of high-bandwidth multimedia applications, including online gaming, media sharing, and IPTV.

The best aspect of the modem is its reliability and backward compatibility with earlier Wi-Fi standards, which lets you connect to any DSL plan that you can access, while still using a stable home internet network.

Pros

Fast enough to comfortably handle high-bandwidth applications

Relatively affordable compared to other routers

Includes plenty of features for a DSL modem

Cons

Tends to overheat and lose connection quite frequently

Can experience random periodic reboots

Conclusion: So, which is better? The C1100T or the C1000A?

While DSL internet is largely on its way out, CenturyLink still relies heavily on it, which makes it necessary to use a compatible router. After analyzing both options in this review, we find the C1100T is our preferred choice as it provides a stable internet connection that covers a wide area in your home.

FAQs

Do all CenturyLink modems need routers to function optimally?

Yes, CenturyLink modems need routers, as they fulfill separate roles and do not replace each other. The good news is that CenturyLink, like most ISPs, provide both routers and modems in one device, helping you to save costs.

Will I need to install a landline to use the C1000A modem?

Yes, in most cases. CenturyLink configures their DSL routers, including the C1000A, to work alongside landline phones.

Costco concierge vs. geek squad- How do they compare?

Costs

This is one of the major differences between the two. Costco concierge is cheaper compared to Geek Squad. For instance, it extends your warranty up to 2 years at no cost. To get the standard protection plan from Geek Squad, you have to pay $24.99 per month. This is way more than the Costco membership cost, which goes for $5 per month. In a year, Costco members pay $60.

Coverage period

Whether you buy an appliance from Costco or Best Buy, you should expect a one-year limited warranty from the manufacturer. Costco concierge can extend this warranty to 2 years, while Geek Squad has a protection plan that can cover a device for up five years.

Services

Geek Squad has better services than Costco concierge. This is because it not only repairs damaged devices but also replaces irreparable ones. It also offers maintenance and installation services to appliances. If you don’t have the time to visit the best buy store for repairs, the Geek squad technicians can come to your home. Costco concierge only offers repairs but not replacements. When you are a Costco member in need of repairs, you can call the Costco concierge to guide you through the process.

Costco concierge vs. geek squad- A comparison overview

Costco concierge Overview

This offers excellent support to most Costco members. You can become a Costco member by purchasing appliances or electronics from Costco. The Costco membership costs $60 a year. If you choose to pay for the membership on a monthly basis, you will have to pay $5 every month.

When you buy products from Costco, you will not only get the manufacturer’s warranty. Costco extends this warranty up to 2 years and at no extra cost. Take note that not every electronic is part of the extended warranty program. The second-year warranty is a repair plan and not a replacement plan.

Apart from extending the warranty, Costco concierge offers free tech support throughout the lifetime of the device. It offers a toll-free number that you can call if you need assistance. Through Costco concierge, you can get technical support for devices such as projectors, televisions, computers, Blue-ray players, routers, cameras, or printers.

Costco concierge has expert technicians that can help you address your specific needs. Whether you speak English or Spanish, you can get tech support in either of these languages. Besides free tech support, Costco members can also enjoy a refund policy of 90 days upon purchasing devices from Costco.

Pros

Offers free tech support

Extend the warranty up to two years

Costco customers can also enjoy a good return policy.

Cons

The warranty is not a replacement policy.

Geek Squad Overview

This works hand in hand with Best Buy stores. It offers protection plans for products that Best Buy sells. It covers different types of appliances and electronics, including cell phones, TV, computers, and tablets. When you choose to pay for the protection plan from Geek Squad, you can protect your devices against any defects that result from wear and tear or power surges.

Geek Squad offers different protection plans, including the standard plan, accidental damage from handling plan, and the protection replacement plan. The protection plans at Geek Squad can cover your devices for up to five years. Geek Squad not only repairs damaged products but also replaces the ones it cannot repair. It can replace your device with another product that is of the same quality.

If Geek Squad does not find an ideal replacement device, it can reimburse you with a gift card or voucher. Geek Squad is not only famous for offering in-store services but also on-site and via the internet. You can either visit the Best Buy store if you need emergency support or contact the Geek Squad experts via telephone. As long as you pay for a protection plan, you can enjoy excellent support during the length of the term.

If, for instance, you notice that one of your Best Buy appliances is not working, you can arrange a home visit with Geek Squad technicians. Such experts can make repairs to the appliance in your home. Take note that you have to pay a certain fee to receive in-home support.

Pros

Offers both repairs and replacements

Covers devices for up to 5 years

It has different protection plans that you can pick from

Offers both in-store and in-home services

Cons

It is expensive.

Verdict: So, which is better? Costco concierge or Geek Squad

Though Costco concierge offers free technical support through the lifetime of an appliance, we think that Geek Squad is better. This is because it offers different protection plans and can cover your devices for longer. It can repair or replace devices that are beyond repair. Geek Squad also offers both in-store and in-home services. We, therefore, choose Geek Squad as the clear winner.

FAQs

What does Costco Concierge cover?

This extends the warranty coverage of devices such as water heaters, TVs, and computers to 2 years.

Is Costco TV extended warranty worth it?

According to most customers, this is worth it since it helps you cover the TV for longer. You can also enjoy free tech support if you have any problems with the TV.

Are Costco warranties good?

A Costco warranty is good, but it is not the best. If you want more comprehensive coverage, you should consider other providers.

Will Costco fix my laptop?

Yes. If you bought the laptop for Costco, you could get it fixed within two years from the date of purchasing it.

The router you have in your home can give everyone access to the internet, but it may not protect you from security threats. Though you can try securing your network by changing your home network’s password and username, these measures cannot guarantee you adequate protection. Netgear Inc., the company behind different router models, came up with advanced protection known as Netgear Armor.

This cyber protection is powered by Bitdefender and is available in mesh systems and Netgear routers. If you want to benefit from it, you should choose one of the routers that feature it. Netgear armor can protect all the devices connected to your home network from online threats. It is a cyber-security solution that includes data protection software, anti-malware, and anti-virus for different devices, including iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS.

Choosing Netgear Armor can help you safeguard your home network against threats such as ransomware, Trojans, spyware, rootkits, phishing, spam, and zero-day exploits. With Netgear Armor, you no longer have to worry about malicious websites attempting to steal your sensitive data as you make online transactions. It can, therefore, give you more peace of mind while shopping for different products online. It also blocks any malicious links to your email or browser.

Since many people rely on wireless connections in this digital era, Netgear came up with a way to protect its customers from cyber threats. Many people choose routers from this company since it partners with Bitdefender to provide advanced network security through Netgear Armor. Bitdefender is a global cybersecurity company that protects more than a million systems in over 100 countries.

Securing all your internet-enabled devices should be a priority. Choosing Netgear Armor can help you with this since it protects every device from security threats. It can prevent them from hackers, viruses, and even spyware. If, for instance, you have different devices in your home such as smart home devices, smartphones, and computers, you can sleep soundly knowing that all of them are well-protected.

Device management

Choosing the Netgear Armor system can also help you manage devices properly. It gives you full control of your home network and allows you to select the devices you want to be connected to the network. If you don’t want specific devices to connect to your home network, this system can help you block them.

If you stay in an insecure neighborhood and are worried about a break-in, you should consider protecting your devices using the Netgear Armor system. This can offer anti-theft protection. It makes sure even if a device is stolen from your home, all the data in it is wiped out remotely. This can prevent you from identity theft.

Threats blockage

The problem with relying on a wireless connection is that you are exposed to different security threats every day. You need to think of ways to protect yourself better. Choosing Netgear Armor can help you enjoy threats blockage. This system can block any online threats from getting to your home network. It can keep you safe from any viruses and ransomware. It can also deploy URL blocking to keep your internet-enabled devices from malicious websites that often drop malware into PCs.

Bitdefender VPN

Since Netgear Armor is a system produced through the partnership of Netgear Inc. and Bitdefender, it has a unique feature known as Bitdefender VPN. This is a useful feature that encrypts your wireless connection to keep all your online activities and data private. The feature can also calculate the level of protection of your network, taking into account your router’s security and all your connected devices. As soon as the Netgear Armor gets the score, you should expect suggestions regarding how to improve your protection level further.

Who is it best suited for?

The digital space is full of security threats that every internet user should beware of. If you are already using a Netgear router such as AC3000, AC2300, or AC3200, you should consider subscribing to Netgear Armor. Since these routers already feature the system, you only need to subscribe to it. It is also suited for people who wish to replace their current routers and those with many devices. If you don’t mind paying more for better protection, then Netgear Armor is for you.

The pricing

Since many people have realized how valuable this form of cybersecurity is, they are always asking about its cost. You can check the pricing of this system on Amazon. Once you have bought one of the Netgear routers or mesh systems we have highlighted above, you can take advantage of this service. Netgear Armor comes with a trial period of 30 days. During this period, you can test the services of Netgear Armor without incurring any additional costs.

If the service impresses you and the month is over, you can subscribe to Netgear Armor. The annual cost for this system is $ 69.99. Even though the cost of this service is not low, it can give you a high protection level and thus great value for your cash.

Are there any alternatives to the Netgear Armor?

Apart from Netgear, other router manufacturers have come up with systems to help customers enjoy high-security levels. Therefore, shopping around is essential since it can help you compare different options so that you can pick an ideal one for your house.

If you prefer routers from Asus, you should consider a model such as Asus RT-AX88U, which features Aiprotection Pro. You can also look at the D-Link router that features McAfee. Alternatively, TP-Link AX6000 that uses Trend Micro, can also help you enjoy some security features. All these routers can help you secure your network through different features. They also come at varying price points that you can compare against Netgear Armor.

Are you looking for a commercial grade router for your business or office? The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 and Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 are two high performance devices that are ideal for both home and commercial setups, but which one of the two is better?

High speed and wide range transmission routers are known to be pretty expensive, and to get one that does exceptionally well in both fronts can cost you a good deal of money. Ubiquiti Networks, as a tech company, has made a name for itself where high performance devices are concerned, and the good thing is that they are also quite affordable. The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 and the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 are two high speed routers ideal for home and commercial settings. So, how do they differ?

Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro 4 vs. Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 – How do they compare?

Design and Build

Router designs are known to take just about any form or shape. A good majority of routers in the market come with a high degree of sophistication, while others maintain beauty and simplicity. When it comes to looks, the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 comes with a somewhat basic look, and if not for its lack of a CD drive, it could quite easily pass for a DVD player. It is flat and rectangular, and requires a decent amount of space to set up. While it can be set on any flat surface such as a desk or table, it often times comes with a mounting rack that is sold separately.

Just like its counterpart, the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 also offers little to write home about as far as looks go. It bears the same flat rectangular shape, resembling a DVD player quite closely. However, you will observe that it is larger than the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway-4, indicating that it demands a little more installation space. In case you do not wish to set it up on any surfaces, you could purchase a mounting rack separately.

Since the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 is smaller and more compact than the Ubiquiti EdegeRouter 4, it stands out as the better one of the two.

Speed and Performance

Nothing sets a router apart quite like the ability to transmit at high speeds over a wide range, even when its design is drab and uneventful. The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 delivers high speeds that peak at an impressive 4000Mbps, allowing you to handle multiple high speed applications. This speed is also coupled with a 64bite packet size that delivers 2,400,000 pps. Additionally, it is able to cover an area that spans 4,500 square feet, making it ideal for massive homes and office settings.

Notably, there is very little (if any at all) difference in performance between the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 and the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4. The latter also comes with the ability to support a top speed of 4000Mbps which supports a multitude of high intensity activity. With a 64bite packet, however, you will receive up to 3,400,000 pps. When it comes to transmission range, this device covers spaces that reach a 4,500 square feet size with ease.

Even though these routers are almost identical, the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter 4 presents more ppms, making it a better router than the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4.

Ports and Connectivity

Routers are essentially charged with facilitating as many wireless connections as possible, but at times it becomes necessary to have wired connections. This is where ports come in. The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 comes with multiple ports for gigabit connectivity, providing 2 WAN ports, 2 LAN ports and one designated serial Rj45 port for gaming consoles. Each of these ports come with the capacity to deliver up to 4Gbps each.

On the other hand, there are 3 Gigabit Rj45 ports made for routing, each delivering a line rate of 4Gbps.Additionally, there is one Gigabit SFP port that is ideal for connecting devices such as gaming consoles. Aside from these gigabit cables, there is one WAN port that receives signals from the modem that gets them from the public domain.

Since the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter4 comes with more Gigabit LAN ports, it makes a better router than the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4.

Nothing quite tests my patience like slow internet speeds, particularly when I am playing a high intensity game with friends. When I first decided to replace my 802.11n router, I had no idea what direction to look, so a pal suggested a Ubiquiti router. Research led me to the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway and the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4. I tested each of them out, and I must say I was impressed by both. However, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security GatewayPro-4 seemed ahead in the game. Here is why.

Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway vs. Security Gateway Pro 4 – How do they differ?

Build and Design

Often times, computer and internet related devices feature futuristic designs. However, a good number of them tend to assume simple and elegant builds. Where design is concerned, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway features a rectangular shape that is more simplistic than it is intriguing. It assumes a horizontal orientation, and since it sits on its belly, it demands a good deal of installation space. For strength and durability, the outer casing is made using metal plates, and on the side panels are slender slits that allow for air flow. This keeps the router from overheating, especially during intense use and during seasons of extreme heat.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4, on the other hand, features a similar rectangular shape. It bears the same size as the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway, but its design is a little plainer. The outer casing is also constructed using metal, keeping it from sustaining damage in the event of an accidental fall. Even though its shape is a little plain, it is deliberately made to allow it to fit into a mounting rack which eliminates the need for you to set it up on a desk. You, however, need to buy the mounting rack separately.

Even though both devices feature the same shape and size, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway bears a more intriguing design, making it more practical than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4.

Performance and Speed

Routers bear varying capacities for speed and transmission range, and finding one that delivers the best of both is quite a bargain. The Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway and the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4 are both ideal for high speed and wide range transmission.

When set up in a home or office environment, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway delivers transmission speeds that peak at an impressive 3Gbps. Additionally, on a 64bite packet, it delivers up to 1,000,000 ppms. These specs make certain that you and your family can enjoy high intensity activity such as gaming across multiple consoles and 4K video streaming without experiencing lag.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4 takes the game a notch higher, delivering a maximum theoretical throughput that peaks at 4Gbps. Also, its 64bite packet brings up to 2,400,000 ppms. This makes all sorts of intense activity a walk in the park, and you do not have to worry about overworking your router.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4 provides higher transmission speeds, making it a faster router than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway.

Ports and Connectivity

Aside from enabling high speed wireless connectivity, routers are also able to facilitate multiple wired connections, but the number of supported devices is dependent on the ports available. The Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway delivers 1 Rj45 port along with 3 LAN ports which support Gigabit transmissions. You can connect several devices such as gaming consoles, smart TVs, your laptop and desktop computer and other internet compatible devices.

Comparably, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4 provides a similar number of ports. However, it has 2 WAN ports and 2 LAN ports for Gigabit connectivity. Additionally, there is 1 Rj45 port on the front panel. Where connectable devices are involved, you can have your smart TV, laptop and desktop computers as well as your gaming consoles connected.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway offers more ethernet ports than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Security Gateway Pro-4 making it the more convenient router where connectivity is concerned.

Are you looking for a router that can support high intensity internet use for multiple devices at the same time? These two devices are built to facilitate this without experiencing lag or down time. So, which one of the two is better?

Homes and offices are slowly becoming entirely dependent on internet. Everyone is steadily abandoning the old style of doing things manually and is increasingly digitalizing every day tasks. This is why it is becoming important to not just find a router, but to find one that can handle multiple high intensity devices at a go while maintaining high speeds and good range. The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 and the Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro are made for these kinds of tasks, but one supersedes the other where performance is concerned.

Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 vs. Dream Machine Pro – How do they compare?

Design and Build

When it comes to router designs, there is not a specific set of rules that governs what routers ought to look like, and this is why there is quite a diversity where looks and builds go. While there are many futuristic and outlandish pieces, there are some that are beautiful and elegant, presenting a good deal of simplicity. The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 falls under neither of these categories since it looks quite basic. It features a rectangular shape and has a flat belly, making it look something like a DVD player. Where size is concerned, you will find that it is average sized, but you may have to create space to install it on. However, you could buy an installation rack that comes separately. The outer casing is made using metal which gives it a good deal of longevity.

The Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro bears this same uninspiring look, presenting the same rectangular shape as its counterpart. However, this particular router is significantly larger, measuring at least three times longer and wider. It is also quite weighty, but since it is made to go on a mounting rack, you do not have to worry about installation. The outer casing is also made using metal, making it quite hardy and resistant to breakage in case of an accidental fall.

Since the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 is small and compact, it stands out as the better router than the Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro.

Speed and Performance

The true mark of an exceptional router lies in its ability to transmit at exceptionally fast speeds over a wide range, and the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 together with the Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro make up for their drab design in this front.

The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 is made for use in both residential and commercial settings. With a top throughput speed of 4Gbps, there is hardly any internet related task it will be unable to handle. When it comes to internet transmission, this device is able to cover a range that spans an impressive 4,500 square feet. This combination will have your family enjoying 4K video streaming, gaming on multiple consoles and even achieving high intensity downloads with ease. Additionally, all parts of the home will be amply covered, whether on the ground or topfloor.

On the other hand, the Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro is specifically made to cover a commercial setting such as an office that covers a wide span. Users will be in a position to enjoy speeds that peak at an impressive 3.5Gbps, and it boasts a wider range, covering up to 5,000 square feet. Keep in mind, however, that the speeds you experience are largely dictated by your ISP and data plan.

The Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4transmits at a higher speed than the Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro, making it the better router of the two.

Ports and Connectivity

Ports are ideal for allowing wired connectivity, and the Ubiquiti Unifi Security Gateway Pro-4 offers a decent number of them.
Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 vs. Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus – How do they compare?

Design and Build

When it comes to technological gadgets and equipment, there is not one particular design that can be said to be the ‘SI Unit’ or go to design. With this in mind, you can expect a product to take just about any shape and form. That said, I found both these gadgets quite simple and sophisticated. The front face of the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 is largely rectangular, but you will notice that it is significantly wider than its counterpart. The outer casing is made using anodized aluminum which gives it a good deal of durability. Even though it is not made to be oved about much, you will not have to worry about significant damage in case you drop it. The front panel of the device has a full display that allows you to see all system details at a go.

At first glance, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus could easily pass for a miniature DVD player. Just like its counterpart, it is made using brushed metal which promises a good deal of longevity and protection from breakage in case of an accidental fall. Unlike the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2, though this one has a much trimmer profile which means it has a smaller display. However, this trim profile makes it much easier to install since it can go into smaller spaces with ease.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus is a slimmer and more compact device than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2, making it the better one o the two.

Speed and Performance

When it comes to management of networks and surveillance devices, both the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 and Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus are ideally very capable.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 is at least 4 times faster than its predecessor. Boasting a 2.0GHz ARM CPU, 8-Core processor, this device is able to handle all its tasks in record time and in impressive precision. This processor also accords it the ability to handle up to 50 devices at a time. As earlier mentioned, this gadget comes with a front display that indicates several parameters, including SDN cloud status, for easy monitoring and management. Aside from a powerful processor, it also comes with a 32GB eMMC memory that gives it good capacity to operate as it should. However, it does not come with an internal hard drive for storage. When it comes to speeds, it supports a throughput of an impressive 400Mbps.

Just like its counterpart, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus comes with a 2.0GHz ARM CPU, 8-Core that allows it the capacity to work in a timely fashion. Additionally, it has a 3GB RAM that boosts its performance significantly. For memory, this device comes with an internal eMMC memory of 32 GB. What sets it apart from its predecessor is its added internal storage in the form of a hard drive that can handle information that reaches a 1TB capacity. This hard drive can be expanded up to 5TB.Its speeds are, however, much slower than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2, reaching a 40Mbps.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus boasts a larger storage capacity, making it better than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2.

Power and Connectivity

When it comes to power, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 is largely dependent on an802.3 – af PoE switch. If an PoE port is unavailable to you, a USB type C cable will suffice in its stead. You will notice that this gadget does not have an internal battery and is dependent on direct power. For connectivity, it is fitted with one 10/100/1000 ethernet port on its back panel.

The Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus also depends on a802.3-af PoE switch, but unlike its predecessor, it comes with an in-built battery that works even when power goes off. Additionally, it also comes with one 10/100/1000 ethernet port.

Due to its in-built battery, the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2 Plus makes a better device than the Ubiquiti Unifi – Cloud Key Gen 2.
