How to set up a Linksys Wireless G Broadband router

A Wireless broadband router allows multiple PCs to use the same internet access point without connecting to the broadband modem.

Linksys Wireless G router is one such device. With a Linksys 3-in-1 residential gateway device, only the Linksys router and one PC need to be connected to the broadband modem. The rest of the devices including other PCs, gaming consoles, wireless printers, and mobile phones with Bluetooth technology-enabled, can access the internet via the Linksys router.

To set up a Linksys wireless G Broadband router, connect the broadband modem to the PC using an Ethernet cable, then connect the Broadband modem to the Linksys Wireless G router and connect a PC to the router, plug the router into a power outlet, visit the Linksys setup page online and configure the router settings.

Is a Linksys Wireless G Broadband router still relevant?

The Linksys Wireless G Broadband router is still relevant depending on the number of devices connected and how fast your connection is. Since its launch in 2002, the router has been dependable. While it might have fallen behind compared to other new router versions, it’s sufficient for someone living alone with a few devices. The most useful feature of this router is its access point. Despite running on a 2.4 GHz band and limited to a 54-megabit 802.11g connection, when loaded with a newer firmware version and placed in the dead zones in your home, the router can eliminate all the dead spots. They are better than no connection at all.

Setting up Linksys Wireless G Broadband router

An internet connection from your ISP comes to your house via a cable outlet. The connection has to then be connected to a modem which converts the digital signals to analog that can be transmitted through wires and vice versa.

First, you need to connect the broadband internet modem to a PC using an Ethernet cable. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the modem’s internet port and the other end into the PC’s Ethernet port. Next, you need to connect a Linksys Wireless G router to the Broadband modem using an Ethernet port. Take one side of the Ethernet cable and plug it into the router’s Internet port and the other into the Broadband modem. Using another Ethernet cable, connect the PC to one of Linksys router’s 4 Ethernet ports labeled from 1 to 4.

Now plug the router into a power source and switch the router and modem on and wait for them to be fully powered on. Ensure all the LED lights on each of the devices are lit and turn the PC on. On the PC, open a web browser, and in the browser’s address bar, type 192.168.1.1 then hit enter to visit the Linksys admin panel. To log in, leave the username empty and enter ‘admin’ in the password field. If this doesn’t work, then enter ‘admin’ in the username field too and click OK to proceed. On the next screen, click on the Wireless tab and give your network a name. Pick a network name or SSID of your choice for your wireless network. This allows anyone in range to see the name and be able to identify your network. So, ensure that you don’t enter any sensitive information. Make sure to disable the ‘Wireless SSID Broadcast’ option and leave the rest of the options as they are and click the ‘Save Settings’ button to save the changes and continue.

You need to set up security for your wireless network, Under the Wireless Security tab, select the WPA2 Personal security mode and enter at least 8 characters in the WPA Shared Key or Passphrase field. To save the changes, click on the Save Settings button. You should now be able to use your wireless network.
