Verify that you quality for ESPN on Roku
Before we dive into the installation process, it’s good to first find out whether you qualify for ESPN or not. ESPN on Roku offers three service levels. The first level is for its subscribers who can watch original content, live sports, and on-demand programming. The second level is ESPN’s US live streams and on-demand access to full episodes of shows on ESPN. This is available to pay TV subscribers with services that include ESPN including Hulu Live and Sling TV. The last level of service is those cord-cutters that don’t have either pay TV or ESPN+ subscription. These users can still watch news, sports scores, video highlights, features, Clips & analysis.
Installing ESPN on Roku
Roku has an app store called the Roku Channel Store where you can find tons of apps including the ESPN app. The first thing to do is to make sure that your Roku device is connected to your TV via an HDMI cable. Connect both of them to the power outlet and turn them on. Sign in to your Roku streaming device using your Roku credentials and then connect to your Wi-Fi network. Navigate to the Roku home screen by clicking on the home button on your Roku remote and then scroll down and click on ‘Streaming Channels’. On the next screen, select ‘Search Channels’ and enter ‘ESPN’ in the search bar. From the search results, select the ESPN app to open its app page. On the next screen, click on the ‘+ Add Channel’ button to install the app on Roku. Wait for the app to finish installing, click on OK and then launch it by clicking the ‘Go to Channel’ button.
Activating ESPN on Roku
With the app installed, you need to activate it to start streaming content on your Roku-connected TV. Before you start, note that these steps apply if you have a pay TV subscription. If you are subscribed to a pay TV service and it’s not listed on ESPN, then you won’t be able to activate ESPN on Roku for live streaming. Also, with an EPSN+ service, you can’t watch the live ESPN networks and can’t be activated if you have a lower-tier pay TV subscription that doesn’t have ESPN.
Open the ESPN app and navigate to the top of the app screen and click on the Settings icon to open settings. Click on ‘Provider Account’ and select ‘Watch live TV’. Next, select ‘Activate Live TV’ to proceed. An activation code will appear on your TV screen. To activate ESPN, open a web browser on your PC or smartphone and copy-paste this link in the address bar. On the next page, enter the activation code on your TV screen and click on ‘Continue’. Next, select a TV provider and sign in using your TV provider’s login information. After meeting all the requirements, the ESPN app on your Roku device will be activated.
If you are subscribed to ESPN+, then the activation procedure is slightly different. Open the ESPN app on your Roku streaming device and click on the Settings icon at the top to visit the settings page. On the next page, click on ‘ESPN account’ and log in using your ESPN+ account credentials. Take note of the activation code displayed on your Roku-connected TV as we will be using it later on. Open a web browser on your phone or PC and in the address bar, copy & paste this link. On the next page, enter the activation code that you took note of earlier and press on ‘Continue’. Now, log in to your ESPN+ account and you should be set. If don’t have an ESPN+ subscription, then click here to get a free trial.
