Google Nest – Overview
The Google nest comes with a bandwidth range of 2,200Mbps and holds a RAM of 1GB. It comes with a processor speed of Quad-core 64-bit ARM CPU 1.4GHz. It uses the Wi-Fi 5 standard and supports Gigabit internet. It is dual band (2.4GHz & 5GHz), 4×4 MU-MIMO and comes with one Ethernet port. You can broadcast the Wi-Fi signal over 3,800 square feet. With one additional Wi-Fi port the device can support up to 200 devices.
The benefits of using the Google Nest Wi-Fi is that you enjoy better internet connectivity than your normal xfinity router. You are also able to create multiple Wi-Fi points in your mesh network. The mesh can be customized to suit unique needs and this gives you better control over your Wi-Fi. You can even customize it for gaming. Once you purchase the Mesh you do not need to pay monthly rent for a Comcast router but still enjoy the benefits of a world class router. On the downside, you do not get the level of support like one who rents out a router from a service provider.
How to setup Google Nest with xfinity internet
- The first step is to login to your xfinity gateway router though the 10.0.0.1 URL. You will need an Ethernet cable for this. You will then be directed to the xfinity gateway screen where you will be asked to enter your username and password
- If you have not had an opportunity to create your own unique password, then the default is username “admin” and “password”.
- Once you have logged in the next step is to click on gateway on the left sidebar and then gateway. Click the toggle bar for enable.
- You should note that once you do this, you will have disabled your private Wi-Fi network and Google Nest will now be providing Wi-Fi
- At some point you will be asked to confirm changes, respond in the affirmative
- The last step is to use an Ethernet cable to connect from one port of the xfinity gateway modem to the WAN port of the Google Nest Wi-Fi
- Restart all your devices so that they now use the Google Nest Wi-Fi. You should also restart your Google Wi-Fi Nest and xfinity Gateway router
If you have done all of the above and you are still not receiving a strong Internet signal than it could be as a result of two things:
Firstly, your Google Nest Wi-Fi could be stuck on device priority mode. In this case, the device allocates 80% of your internet bandwidth to a single device over a certain period. You can change this by going to the Google Wi-Fi app on your phone and clicking on settings than “Network settings” than choose “privacy”. Next, disable your cloud services for 10 to 15 seconds. Go back to settings and click on the “priority device”. In the priority device tab select on “end priority”. When done save your changes.
The other problem could be as a result of the network creating a double network address translation (NAT) as both devices are capable of routing. The main cause for this is that a firewall is created that prevents stable connection from being established. You correct this by disabling the firewall by going to http://10.0.0.1 and going to gateway>firewall>custom security>disable entire firewall than saving the settings.
Alternatively, you can use the xFi pods to extend coverage to your Wi-Fi network. The pods offer seamless connection to your devices and enhance performance and speeds. The pods are small enough to fit in most rooms and enable you to create a powerful mesh network.
