Best Alternatives for Netgear Nighthawk

Are you looking to shift brands and try something new other than a Netgear Nighthawk Router? There are some great alternatives in the market currently, and they do a stellar job at getting your home well connected.

I have been an avid user of Netgear Nighthawk routers for a good deal of time, and I can say for certain that I have never been disappointed with the way they perform, even when intense activity is going on. I especially loved two things about them; the NETGEAR Armor that provides effective protection for all my data and the mobile app that made controlling my router really easy. Having used my last Netgear Nighthawk router for a number of years, I felt the need to shift, more for exploration than anything else, really. I stumbled upon a good deal of alternatives, and boy are they many! So, as every other self-respecting tech-head, I decided to test and review some of the most impressive ones.

Top 5 Best Alternatives for Netgear Nighthawk Products Review

So, there are many routers out there that operate across different standards, ranging from 802,11n, 802.11ac and 802.11ax. That said, you are going to notice that my list is almost dominated by the 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) standard, and the reason behind this is that I was looking for an upgrade from 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5). Below is a review of each selected router.

  1. Netgear Orbi RBK852 AX6000Excellent for massive homes with high internet needs

NETGEAR Orbi Whole Home Tri-Band Mesh WiFi 6 System (RBK852) – Router With 1 Satellite Extender | Coverage Up to 5,000 sq. ft. and 60+ Devices | 11AX Mesh AX6000 WiFi (Up to 6Gbps)

Being an avid Netgear fan, I would have done myself little justice if I failed to look within Netgear for a suitable alternative.

Key features

  • Mesh router
  • Transmits at 6,000Mbps
  • Covers up to 5,000 square feet
  • Can handle up to 60 devices at a time

The Netgear range of routers has come a long way, and the RBK852 is currently the fastest (and most expensive) of them all. What I found most striking was the shape and design, a complete shift from what most Nighthawk devices look like. This one features a lot more simplicity and elegance. More impressive, though, is this router’s ability to cover a massive home that spans 5,000 square feet. This aspect is largely aided by the fact that it comes with a satellite device that works to boost the range of internet transmission from a strategic point within the home. With this setup, experiencing speeds that clock an impressive 6,000Mbps from wherever you are in the home becomes easy. With the Netgear Orbi RBK852, you can connect up to 60 devices at a go.

Pros

  • Covers a very large area
  • Transmits at high speeds
  • Has a simple and stylish design
  • It is a mesh router
  • Can handle many devices at the same time

Cons

  • It is quite expensive

Verdict

If you are a person that has a large home and you do not mind spending a good amount of money for the best, this router is for you. You will enjoy lightning speed internet even when there are many high intensity connections.

Key features

  • Mesh router
  • Covers a range of 4,400 square feet
  • Transmits at a speed of 2,200 Mbps
  • Dual band router

This router is the only Wi-Fi 5 device in the list, and I chose it for its incredibly reliable mesh system. Often times, it comes as a pack of two, with one acting as the router and the other acting as a satellite device to boost the signal and range of coverage throughout the home. You are going to notice that it is a little slower than others, and that is because it is a Wi-Fi 5 router. When set up in a home that spans 4,400 square feet, the router is able to deliver speeds that reach 2,200Mbps. This is still a considerably fast speed, especially where there are not too many users of internet.

Pros

  • It makes a strong mesh system
  • Covers a considerably wide range
  • Transmits at decent speeds
  • Small and easy to install

Cons

  • Comes with only few ports

Verdict

Even though this device comes with very few ports, you will hardly feel deprived since its ability to provide comprehensive coverage is really good. It is the go-to router for people who like small and elegant devices.

  1. Linksys Velop AX5300Features a simple but beautiful build

  • Mesh Wi-Fi router provides next-gen Wi-Fi 6 speeds and whole-home mesh coverage

This router can cover a house that spans 3,000 square feet with incredibly fast and reliable internet with little strain.

Key features

  • Transmits at 5,300Mbps
  • Covers a range of 3,000 square feet
  • Mesh enabled
  • Controlled via Linksys App

The Linksys Velop AX5300 made an impressive router for its ability to cover a 3,000 feet house with really fast internet. So, what makes this impressive? Most routers that are Wi-Fi 6 enabled often times provide high speed internet for massive homes that are larger than 4,500 square feet. So, if you have a home that spans 2,500 – 3,000 square feet and you get a Wi-Fi 6 router, it may be something of overkill. This is why the Linksys Velop AX5300 proved practical. It provides high speed internet for medium sized homes. As a tri-band router, it dispenses high speed internet amply, even where high intensity activity is underway. One of its best features has to be its mobile app that gives you total control of the router from the convenience of your mobile phone. It allows you to switch the router on and off, run parental controls and even manage guest networks.

Pros

  • Covers a considerably wide range
  • Transmits at decent speeds
  • Forms a strong mesh system
  • Comes with an excellent mobile app

Cons

  • It is a bit pricey

Verdict

I was glad to find a Wi-Fi 6 router that would not be an overkill for a home that is not as large as 6,000 square feet. This aspect, combined with the ease of installation and use, makes it an incredibly practical router and an easy favorite.

This router takes connectivity, wired and otherwise, to the next level with its strong Wi-Fi and multiple LAN ports.

Key features

  • Covers a range of 5,000 square feet
  • Transmits at a speed of 6,000Mbps
  • Has 8 LAN ports
  • Dual band router

The one thing that is quite unusual about this router is that it is dual band. Often times, routers that transmit at such speeds have a tri-band configuration. This router performs quite well none the less. The characteristic that makes it an exceptional device where range is concerned is its 8 powerful antennas that boost the speed and range of transmission. They give this router the capacity to deliver 6,000Mbps speeds over a range of 5,000 square feet. With this kind of performance, you can connect many devices at a go, and perform intense activity such as gaming on multiple consoles. What I did not fancy is the fact that this router is quite bulky and needs a good deal of space for installation.

Pros

  • Covers a wide range
  • Transmits at really high speeds
  • Comes with many ports
  • Can handle many devices at the same time

Cons

  • It is bulky and requires a lot of space

Verdict

This router looks every bit like a futuristic space ship, especially with its octagon shape and 8 external antennas. More impressive, however, is its overall ability to amply cover a medium sized home with high speed internet, and the capacity to support multiple high intensity functions without straining at all.

So, what should you look out for when you go out to get a good router to replace your Netgear Nighthawk?

Factors to consider when buying a Netgear Nighthawk replacement

Below are a few things to be on the look out for when you go to purchase a router for regular home use.

Wi-Fi Standard

As earlier mentioned, routers often times run on a specific standard that dictates its ability to transmit at high speeds. At the moment, the 802.11ac and 802.11ax standards happen to be the fastest and most reliable. Go for a router that runs on either of these standards for great speeds and comprehensive coverage.

Transmission Range

Be sure to confirm the range within which a router stays effective, especially if you have a massive home. The most reliable routers are mesh devices that have satellites to boost range of signals. Ensure that the router you pick can amply cover all rooms and levels of your home effectively.

Transmission Speed

This is where the essence of a good router lies. There is no point in getting a good looking router that disappoints when you need it to come through for you. Thankfully, there is a myriad of high speed routers from which to choose. Go for a high speed router that will not have any qualms supplying your entire home with good internet speeds.

Processor

A router’s processor is its engine. It is the heart of the router, and a powerful one results in a powerful router. Be on the lookout for this aspect, and avoid anything that goes below 1GHzDual Core and a RAM of 512MB. Routers that have this or better prove extremely reliable.

Conclusion

There is no doubt about it, Netgear Nighthawk routers are exceptionally reliable and powerful, but there are other brands that can perform just as efficiently and even better. The routers market is dominated by a good number of Tech giants, and picking one router out of all of them can be something of an uphill task. Thank goodness for the likes of us. The above reviewed routers are really good, and you are going to be home and dry with one of them. So, which one of them would I recommend? The Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 stood out as the most versatile and reliable for its ability to handle professional gaming and regular use with equal expertise. Even though it may cost you an arm and a leg, every coin is absolutely worth it.
