The Best Routers for 2-Storey House Buying Guide

Are you looking for a router that will comprehensively cover every room in your 2 story home? There are several brands in the market that have the capacity to give you high speed transmission on all levels of your home.

For a long time, I had been on the lookout for a router that could amply cover my entire home with reliable internet. Before moving houses, I was living in a small 1,000 square feet home, and my router was doing just enough for me and my small family. After moving into a 4,000 square feet house, I realized that my home schooled kids and I (I run a small tech company) could not work from our rooms and home office. The router was too small to cover us. So I set out in search of a high-speed, wide-range home router and found a few interesting devices.

The Best Routers for 2-Storey House Review

Having picked 7 of the best routers, let’s take an in-depth look into each one to see why they make great routers for large homes with high internet needs.

  1. Netgear Orbi AC3000Excellent for creating a mesh system

When it comes to whole home coverage, this router makes an excellent device. I also really liked that it is easy to install.

Key features

  • Mesh router
  • Transmits at 1,900Mbps
  • Covers 5,000 square feet
  • Handles up to 25 devices

First off, I really liked the Netgear Orbi AC3000 router’s design. It looks quite simplistic, but there is an elegance about it that makes it compatible with most home décor. What I fancied more, though, is the fact that it has the capacity to cover a home that spans 5,000 square feet without batting an eyelid. Impressively, it transmits speeds that reach a cool 1,900Mbps, but there is a catch. The Netgear Orbi AC3000 is a dual band router, meaning that the speed is split into two and is transmitted from two bands. The first band, a 2.4GHz does 600Mbps and the second, a 5GHz band transmits at 1,300Mbps. with such speeds, even high intensity gaming will be as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Pros

  • Covers a wide range
  • Transmits at high speeds
  • Can handle many devices at a time
  • Blends beautifully with most home décor

Cons

  • It is a bit pricey

Verdict

For a family that has high internet needs and has a massive home, this router bears the capacity to amply deliver. If you are keen about your home décor, you will be glad to know that this device blends in quite well.

Here is the thing, the Google OnHub by TP-Link was specifically designed to act as a piece of décor for your home. The shape and style was very deliberate, and this is why there is not a logo or external feature that lets you know it is a router. It does a great job transmitting internet all the same. Since it is not a mesh router, there is need for powerful antennas to facilitate wide coverage. This is why the Google OnHub by TP-Link is fitted with 13 internal antennas.  Also a dual band router, its 1900Mbps throughput is split into two in this manner: 600Mbps from a 2.4GHz band and 1300Mbps from a 5GHz band. For this reason, it often comes as a set of two or three devices, with one acting as the main router and the others acting as satellite devices. A set of two devices covers a range of 4,400 square feetwhile that of two devices covers a range of 6,600 square feet. Since it is a dual band router, its 2,200Mbps is dispensed as such; 450Mbps from a 2.4GHz band and 1,733Mbps from a 5GHz band. Unlike most of its dual bad counterparts placed in the same caliber, the Asus Lyra happens to be a tri-band router, an aspect that is rare for devices in its league. That said, the three-way distribution of internet speeds makes it quite reliable. A 2.4GHz band delivers 400Mbps while two 5GHz bands deliver 867Mbps speeds each. Since this router is a mesh device, it comes with two hubs (satellites) that allow for great coverage over a range of 5,400 square feet. This makes it an ideal router for even massive homes.

Buying a router for a 2 story home – What to look out for

Here are a few things you can look out for when buying a router for your two story house.

Transmission range

While a good number of routers are able to transmit at decent speeds, not all of them can amply supply a house with multiple stories with good internet.Ensure that your chosen router can be able to cover all rooms on all levels of your home with good speeds and no dead zones.

Transmission speed

Go for a router that has the capacity to transmit at high speeds, especially if your home has high internet demands. Since routers operate across different standards, go for a router that runs on the latest internet standards such as 802.11ac and 802.11ax.

Indoors vs. Outdoors

If your home is overly expansive, you can buy a router that is able to cover the indoors and a significant part of your outdoors so that you enjoy great internet coverage both inside and outside your home.

Ease of use

Most routers in this day and age come with a mobile app that allows you full control from the convenience of your phone. This way, you can be able to control your router from wherever you are in the home. Ensure that your router allows you to access many features of the router easily.

Conclusion

A bad internet connection can test your patience in ways you did not deem possible. That is why it is important to get a router that amply covers a large house with wide spread internet. Ensure that the router you purchase will have no issues covering the ground and top floors. That said, it is important to note that the best kind of device for a large home is a mesh router. However, there are routers that are not mesh enabled that work just as well. So, what router would I recommend? I found the Netgear Orbi AC3000 incredibly reliable and its mesh system was strong and wide spread. The signal was stronger near the router, but my basement and attic also enjoyed high speed transmission, and it felt like I was just a few feet away from the router. For this reason, I would highly recommend it.

FAQs

  1. Are all routers compatible with Amazon Alexa?

No, not all of them are compatible with the likes of Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. If you would like one that is compatible with smart home devices, be sure to confirm before purchase.

  1. Does a router’s RAM matter?

Yes, it does. A large RAM often results in better speeds and more reliability, especially where the router is required to handle many devices at a go.
