Sling tv breakdown – is it worth it?
The American streaming TV service is a great way to cut the cord with the space growing rapidly leading to an increase in competition.
Sling TV is one of the players in the streaming TV space. The service is a subsidiary of Dish Network and has over 2.5 million subscribers as of February 2020. However, the question is, is it worth it?
To find out if Sling TV is worth it, let’s check out the devices supported, content it offers, it’s pricing, and how easy it is to cancel your subscription.
Telling whether Sling TV is worth it or not, we have to look at a number of factors to help us determine if it’s worth your money and time. They are as follows:
Table of Contents
Supported platforms
Sling TV was unveiled in 2015 and is available in both the US and Puerto Rico. The streaming service can be accessed on a wide variety of devices including TV-connected devices like Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Android TV, Apple TV among others, on mobile (Android, iOS, and Chromecast), on PC (Windows 7 or higher, macOS, and Linux). As you can see, it’s available on a wide range of devices cutting across from mobile to TV.
Content
Content is what you’re primarily singing up for. When it comes to content, Sling TV has pretty good content. Sling has two packages to choose from – Sling Orange and Sling Blue. Both packages come with 26 channels on the base package including popular channels like CNN, HGTV, BBC America, Food Network and so much more. The Sling Orange package contains Disney and several ESPN channels as additional channels. Sling Blue on the other hand comes with an additional 12 channels including Bravo, Disney, several Fox-owned networks, the NFL Network, and a host of Fox and NBC channels in select markets.
Besides live TV, Sling TV offers a selection of on-demand content like some shows and movies not available on any other streaming services including Billions, Real Housewives, etc. if you aren’t satisfied with the base channels, then you can choose genre-based channel package add-ons starting at $5/month. With this offer, you can add to your selection kids channels, sports channels, movie channels, etc. For an extra $5 – $10/month, you can add to your plan premium channels like Starz, Showtime, and Epix. This extra $5 is disappointing when you consider that there are other providers offering better DVR services inclusive of the package prices. For example, Hulu offers a DVR service with its single package, but Sling still stands out considering the ads inserted into your DVR content and can’t be skipped.
The newer DVR service is top-notch with the only downside being the limited 50 hours of recording which doesn’t take long before one runs out of space.
Price
Sling TV’s two main packages – Sling Orange and Sling Blue each cost $30 per month and $45 per month when combined. For the first month, as an introductory price, it will cost you $20 20 for either package. Since some channels overlap with some unique channels being offered on either package, to get both of them in the first month will cost you $35 and then $45 in subsequent months.
These prices when compared to a streaming service like Hulu, are cheaper and don’t come with any ads. For example, it costs $64.99/month on Hulu which comes with ads. It costs $70.99 to upgrade and get rid of the ads.
Conclusion
At that price for that content and the number of supported devices, Sling TV is worth every dime. If you get the combined packages, the price is still cheaper than popular streaming services like Hulu and comes without ads. However, Sling TV lacks some local channels.
