How to get internet with no coax outlet

The internet has become so essential that it’s part of our lives today.

There are various ways to get an internet connection in your home with the most common being connecting your modem to the coax outlet on the wall which can be found in almost all houses. But what if mine doesn’t have or I want to use an alternative, how can I get internet without the coax outlet?

You can get internet with no coax outlet using a landline, through satellite/dish, or set up a mobile hotspot.

Cable internet is faster and more reliable than DSL or satellite. This is why most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) supply the internet using a cable connection that relies on the coax outlet. However, if you don’t have one, then do not worry.

How to get internet

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

We’ve had landlines in our houses before mobile phones came. These lines are very useful if you don’t have a coax outlet. DSL is an internet technology that uses telephone lines to transmit internet service in homes. Note that DSL isn’t the same as dial-up since it uses a different frequency from voice calls and is way faster than dial-up internet. Its speeds range from less than 1 Mbps to about 100 Mbps. Most ISPs offer DSL internet on networks with huge coverage and chances are that you have one in your area. Check your home and see if you have a telephone line cable that you can plug the DSL into.

Satellite

Satellite or dish is one of the most obvious alternatives since it’s the most common medium used in rural areas. Usually, the provider packages TV and internet services together. However, it’s still possible to get on internet services without TV by finding an internet provider supplying internet through satellite. Satellite works best when you have a clear view of the sky from your house. If the house is in a deep valley, then chances are that it might not work well. The dish is installed on your house’s roof and then connected to a wireless router that transmits the signals for your wireless devices. Alternatively, you can also plug it directly into the box using an Ethernet cord. The downside of a satellite is that it’s attached to your house and the dish isn’t mobile which limits your location abilities.

However, a mobile satellite is available too and is primarily used by people using RVs or travel trailers. However, their plans are rather expensive but you can also get TV services besides the internet while on the road. This still method still works like the dish method and ya you still need a clear view of the sky and the wireless signals will still be transmitted to a router first. When on the road, it’s good to protect your network using a strong password so as to keep your information and network safe from anyone trying to hack it.

The last disadvantage of satellite internet is that the plans come with usage restrictions. Plans vary depending on the carrier and most of them have data consumption limits. Your speed will be throttled once you reach the maximum on your plan. Ensure that the plan you choose has enough data that meets your needs.

Mobile hotspot

Mobile hotspots are some of the most convenient ways to get the internet not only in your house but also outside. There are two ways to set up a mobile hotspot – using your smartphone as one or buying a standalone hotspot device. If your internet provider allows hotspot usage, then you can make your mobile phone one and connect your PC or wireless device to it. You however need a good internet plan preferably an unlimited plan to make the most out of it. With a 4G signal strength, you should be able to run most apps without issues. Instead of your phone, you can also purchase a standalone hotspot device that is easier to operate than your phone but needs to be recharged too. Internet providers like FreedomPop offers a hot spot plus free monthly data allocation which after finishing you can buy more data.
