 FTPS and Hypertext Transfer Protocol are two widely used forms of file transfer via the internet. How do these two compare in regard to performing the task?

FTPS is a hybrid form of FTP which is obtained by tunnelling FTP through a SSL or TSL server, in order to give the data an added layer of security. This is done because FTP is known to be very insecure, which is its major drawback. Aside from this, the functionality of FTPS is exactly the same as that of the plain FTP.

Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, abbreviated as HTTP is an internet protocol whose primary function is to allow the user to access data from the Web. It works by combining the functions of SMTP and FTP, which are slowly being phased out of technological. It uses port 80 to establish a single TCP connection for data transfer, making it efficient for the transfer of small data files. Its messages are encrypted, being read by the web browser and server, and are immediately delivered, without automatic storage.

Why would they be compared?

FTPS and HTTP are compared because they perform the same primary task, transfer of files across the internet. The only difference between FTPS and FTP is the additional SSL encryption used in FTPS. Therefore comparing HTTP to FTPS is the same as comparing it to FTP.


The comparison between FTPS and HTTP is valid and similar to one between FTP and HTTP, with the exception of the security factor that is incorporated in FTPS


Is FTPS more secure than SFTP?

Although both SFTP and FTPS are said to be equally secure, it would be safe to say that SFTP is more secure than FTPS. This is because, although SFTP is easy to port through its firewalls, it is built on a secure data network, which leaves no room for error compared to FTPS, which is run on a secure network.
