Asus 1750 vs. Asus 1900 – should I go for both ASUS routers?

You might want to replace your router, but chances are you might not have enough funds to buy a premium-end router. If this is the case for you, you will be glad to know that there are plenty of great options out in the market that do not require you to break the bank, yet still provide great performance, such as the ASUS AC1750 and AC1900.

In your quest to look for a great router, you might have come across the Asus brand, and thought of getting one of them, like the ASUS AC1750 and AC1900. ASUS routers are great because of their budget-friendly prices in most cases that still offer great performance – although you quickly learn that the performance that the AC1750 and AC1900 offer isdifferent, as we did learn when using them.

Both of these are AC routers, which mean they are dual band types. It can be understandably challenging to choose between them, especially because you might not know what the AC denotation means, or what the differences between them are. ASUS AC1750 vs. AC1900 – How they compare

Differences in design

The AC1750 unit comes with three non-removable antennas, and measures 1.7 x 8.5 x 5.8 inches. On its front edge you will find the USB 3.0 port, while the top section has activity LEDs that show you the status of the router (whether it is on or off, internet connectivity, both radio bands, and the four LAN ports. The rear contains the WAN and LAN ports, the USB 2.0 port, power jack, and the buttons for the WPS, Reset, and Power.

Like the AC1750, the AC1900 also has a glossy black finish, although it is different from the AC1750 because you can mount it vertically. It measures 6.2 x 8.6 x 3.2 inches, and has three adjustable, removable antennas at its top.

Aside from this, it also has 10 LED lights along its bottom – one for power, two for Wi-Fi connectivity, and two for USB connectivity, one for WAN activity, and four for LAN activity. The general settings include AiCloud, Traffic Analysis, and Guest Networking, and there is also a USB application section that supports Samba, print-server functionality, iTunes, FTP-server, and Time Machine.

Differences in power sources and specs

In the case of the AC1750, it uses a 1GHz dual-core CPU as the power source, and like the AC1900, has a RAM of 256 MB and flash memory of 128 MB. Both routers support beam forming, but the AC1750 does not have MU-MIMO streaming.

Like the AC1900, it uses the AsusWRT console for management purposes, although you can also use the Asus Router app to help in your management without the web console – the app is available for both Android and iOS devices. Both the console and app are user-friendly and intuitive, and is divided into three sections; the center has a network map, advanced and general settings on the left side, and a system status panel on its right.

In the case of the AC1900, the standout feature that boosts its performance is the Adaptive QoS (Quality of Service), which has a bandwidth monitor that keeps track of your bandwidth, and allows you to set up the network priority for specific clients. Along with AiProtection, you can also use the several services that protect your network, which include infected client blocking, malicious site blocking, and routine vulnerability scans.

Performance

The AC1750 is very easy to configure and install, and its performance is also great – in fact, it surpasses plenty of budget routers that we have tested so far. The 2.4GHz 5-foot test gave us a result of 97 Mbps, and this performance dropped slightly to 65 Mbps when we tested it at 30 feet.

Its performance on the 5GHz band was also great, scoring 551 Mbps on the 5-foot test, although the score at 30 feet dropped significantly to 230 Mbps. It did struggle with the file transfer test though, both in reading and writing, giving a score of 38 Mbps in reading and 34 Mbps in writing.

The AC1900 also uses the Setup Wizard, which launches automatically when you plug in the router to a host PC. The throughput tests are just as impressive; the 2.4GHz band scored 98 Mbps in the 5-foot test, making it slightly higher than the AC1750’s 97 Mbps, while its throughput at 30 feet was 75.8 Mbps. On the other hand, the 5GHz band gave a score of 533 Mbps in close proximity, while the 30-foot test delivered 298 Mbps.

In terms of its file transfer performance, the results were average at best. The writing test resulted in a speed of 34.2 Mbps, and the read test result was 35.1 Mbps, so it does not fare much better compared to the AC1750.

Another budget-friendly option that is slightly more expensive than the ASUS AC1750, the AC1900 is great for a medium to large-size home. It also gives you a solid feature set, performs very well in both 5GHz and 2.4GHz throughput tests, protection against infected clients and malicious websites, two USB ports, and plenty of management settings.

As we mentioned earlier, the AC1900 uses a dual core processor of 1.4GHz to provide it with sufficient power. It also comes in with advanced wireless settings to help you create routing rules and regulate the network, both locally and remotely.

Verdict: So which is better? The ASUS AC1750 or AC1900?

When all is said, both of these routers are very good at their performance, despite being budget routers – in many ways, they surpass the expectations you might place on them. We do have to choose a winner though, and our choice from this review is the AC1900, mainly because of the long range and higher speeds compared to the AC1750, because of the Adaptive QoS feature.
