Pfsense Vs Open BSD – Which is the better security solution

Which is the better routing and security solution between Pfsense and Open BSD.

Pfsense is a free and open source Firewall and router distribution software that was originally designed to allow users to build their own routers and routing systems from scratch. It is based on a Free BSD Operating system and its wholesome network approach allows it to have functionality that can be likened to an Operating system, though it is just a software. Open BSD is a free operating system that is Unix-like. It focuses on portability, correctness, cryptography and standardization of network system

It is impossible to objectively compare the two because Open BSD is an Operating system, while Pfsense is a software. It would be more prudent to compare Open BSD to Free BSD instead.

So why would they be compared to each other?

The operating system that Pfsense is based on, Free BSD is one of the biggest competitors of the Open BSD Operating system. Pfsense has a wholesome approach to security and routing which makes its capability and efficiency almost identical to those of Free BSD, but from a simpler Graphic and web based User Interface compared to the Command line that both Free BSD and Open BSD use.

Conclusion

Pfsense and Free BSD have similar functionalities, which makes it a direct competitor for Open BSD. However, Pfsense is not an Operating System, hence does not operate the same way, although they can both be used to perform similar tasks
